The Cost Of Stress

The Effect That Stress Bring To Us
This TED video on The cost of workplace stress - and how to reduce it by Rob Cooke discusses the massive impact that workplace stress brings to us and is related to productivity and wellness. Rob had provided many authoritative data to prove that the world economy can directly influence by stress. One research found that work-related stress can be linked to employee disengagement, chronic disease that impacts people's work, and work-related injuries and illnesses. The cost of all five factors is an estimated 2.2 trillion dollars annually. From the data, we can tell that stress can have a substantial affective on our global economy. One example he provides is a signal mom with a stressful job that costs her no time to cook for her child, and unhealthy nutrition lets her child gets diabetes. The cost of medical gives her more stress, which leads her to become less productive. From the example, stress will impact the economy by reducing productivity and increasing health care costs. And then Rob start to talks about we can move forward in a corporation. People are the number one thing for a company, so the best for employees to get less affected by stress is to be active in changing the corporation's culture and environment. The company needs to show its care of the employee's mental health and overall well-being by measuring it or having a gym at the office to release the stress. And it's also crucial to listen to the employee's pressure and needs, and then act. Finally, people need to learn to be honest with themselves and know their damage. To live in the present, do not let the past failures affect you and stress you out, and learning how to manage your stress.

I'm major in the management of the human resource. When my professor recommended this video to us, I thought a lot about what stress can bring to a company and an individual. Base on my research, stress can disrupt almost every system of people's bodies. The website calls Help Guide had described that "Stress can suppress your immune system, upset your digestive and reproductive systems, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and speed up the aging process (Jeanne Segal, Ph.D.)." Many stresses are coming from work. I'm a salesperson at a wholesale company. My job is to visit stores to sell our product. This job brings a lot of stress for me. I'm always feeling pressure because I couldn't stop thinking about what strategy I can use to increase my sales quantity, no matter I'm eating or before sleeping. This unhealthy lifestyle ultimately harmed my immune system and sleeplessness, and it also made me less productive. Nowadays, many companies have realized the importance of reduces employee's stress. But, to minimize work-stress, people should start from themselves. There are five ways to manage their anxiety; remove the stressor, withdraw from the stressor, change stress perceptions, control stress consequences, and receive social support. I think the change stress perspective is the most effective way. When you switch your stress to motivation, you will not only have less stress, but you can also increase your productivity.

Overall, the video is about how work stress can impact an individual's wellness and productivity and then toward a corporation. Managing employees' work stress is an essential skill in organizational behavior because Rob said, people are the most competitive advantage for a company.

  4. I found it interesting how Cooke believes that stress is a culture rather than a consequence because of how close wellness, health, work, and stress are in one environment. It's important to manage your own stress and find mindfulness.

  8. Of the top 5 ways to manage anxiety and stress in the workplace what have you found to be the most effective while working a wholesale sales job? The amount of impact stress has on everything is ridiculous - it's likely one of the main factors for monetary output as well as inefficient workers are very costly to organizations.
